Is anybody out there??

Well…this is awkward. Remember that time I had a blog and wrote every day, and then still had a blog but never wrote anything?

…sorry, universe.

Not that I’m assuming anyone reads this thing, but if you did, I apologize for being MIA. SO MUCH has happened in the last 6 months, I don’t even know where to begin. But I need to get it all out there, because I’m still processing everything, and I’m hoping that writing it down will help.

It all started about June/July. I started gaining weight for no apparent reason. Nothing major, but sooner or later I was up 10 lbs from a couple of months before, and I couldn’t understand why. My eating habits didn’t change, my workouts were only getting better. And it wasn’t muscle, might I add…I was noticing fat deposits in strange places, and my clothes were no longer fitting.

There were other weird things too…I was tired, constantly. No matter how many hours of sleep I got, I would wake up feeling like聽I was hit by a truck. I was also moodier, almost depressed. I was getting dizzy spells every time I stood up. And the bloating…oh gosh the bloating. On more than one occasion I would cry to my husband that I was six months pregnant – my stomach was THAT distended. I was googling “Am I pregnant and don’t know it??,” that’s how bad it was. I was frustrated, discouraged, and fairly pissed off.

So…I went to the doctor.

I think another reason why I’m writing this is to encourage women to listen to their bodies, and if something doesn’t FEEL right, then DO something about it! I did something about it, and 6 months later I’m so thankful I did.

It took 6 months to figure out what my deal was. We started with thyroid, which seemed like a good place to start given my symptoms. Tests came back showing that I had a fairly good-looking thyroid, but my doctor had also done a blood panel which showed I was significantly low on B-12 and iron. HOORAY, easy fix! More B-12 meant more energy, which I desperately wanted. I took 4 shots in the butt of B-12, started popping iron pills, and got my blood work checked again 6 weeks later.

No change.

My body wasn’t absorbing any of the vitamins and nutrients. Wierd, right? My doc then went through a round of hormone/endocrine tests that showed I had high levels of cortisol in my system (probably due to some stress my body was under). At this point, I was pissed. I don’t stress easily, so why is my cortisol elevated? Why am I not absorbing anything? WHY DO I LOOK PREGNANT???

WWG 6.4.12

Weekly Workout Goal time!!! WWG…I like it 馃檪

I didn鈥檛 do so hot on my WWG鈥檚 last week. I was SO sore from T/W/Th that I took Friday off (which is ok!), but then the weekend got busy and unfortunately T/W/Th were my only workout days. This week will be better though, that鈥檚 for sure.

Here are my goals by day. For the week, my goal is to hit 6 out of 7 of these days. I know I need a rest day, but I鈥檓 not sure which day will work out best, and I don鈥檛 want to plan one just yet.

  • Monday: Boot camp (weights + cardio day)
  • Tuesday: Boot camp (cardio day)
  • Wednesday: Gym (heavy legs)
  • Thursday: Boot camp (weights + cardio day)
  • Friday: Gym (HIIT sprints + upper body weights)
  • Saturday: Boot camp (weights + cardio)
  • Sunday: Gym (heavy legs)

If I take off a day, it will probably be Saturday. Or I may do heavy legs Saturday and take Sunday off. We shall see 馃檪

WIAW – Memorial Day Weekend Cleansing!

I hope all of you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! We are so blessed to live in a country that values personal freedoms, and that we have men and women choosing to fight and lay down their lives for those freedoms.

My weekend was jam-packed, to say the least. It started on my Friday off, when I drove down to Houston to watch one of my best friends and old college roommate graduate from MEDICAL SCHOOL!! That’s right, Sarah became Dr. Sarah. It was such a great moment for her, and I’m so glad I got to be there. It also was a rude awakening, that we had been out of college for 4 years already :(. Ha!

Hey graduate!

What made an amazing moment even MORE amazing, was that as soon as my best friend walked across the stage to graduate, I got a text saying that my precious little niece had been born! I am officially a first-time aunt, and I could NOT be more excited! So, after spending Friday night celebrating Sarah’s awesomeness, I woke up Saturday morning and immediately trucked back up to Dallas to meet sweet Georgia Eve.

She is the most precious gift!

After spending too short of time with my girl, we headed off to Tyler, TX to spend the remainder of the weekend with friends at the lake! Needless to say, as jam-packed as the weekend was, it was FULL of blessings and friendships and I wouldn’t of changed one thing about it!

Speaking of jam-packed…my weekend was ALSO jam-packed full of unhealthy eating 馃槮 Between road trips, celebratory dinners, and meals on the lake, I came home Monday night craving fruit, veggies, and my healthy eating routine. I spent Monday night grocery shopping and food prepping, so when Tuesday rolled around I was ready to go.

Breakfast was amazing, per usual. It is my FAVORITE meal of the whole day. I had my own version of a McMuffin, with one whole wheat english muffin topped with 1 egg and 1/2 cup egg whites (scrambled!). I also added a tiiiny bit of breakfast sausage to give it some extra yummy-ness. Oh, and coffee. Duh!

A few hours later, I was working away and got hungry again (naturally), so I grabbed a Luna Bar. I was SUPER excited about this one: Peanut Honey Pretzel. All of my favorite things rolled into one bar. It was more amazing than I thought it could be. I highly recommend this flavor!!

For lunch, I was able to go home and put together a bowl full of some veggies that my awesome husband grilled for me, and one Al Fresco Chicken Sausage (sun-dried tomato is my favorite!). I topped it off with a little bit of cheddar and I was good to go.

I was still pretty full by the time 4:00 rolled around (heck, I was probably still full from the weekend!), but I knew I needed to grab something to eat before I headed to boot camp, so I snacked on a banana with 1 TBS of PB2
(powdered peanut butter…if you haven’t tried it yet, I highly suggest you do!).

That snack definitely helped fuel my body for my ridiculously hot, humid, intense, cardio-filled workout. I was DYING the entire hour, but so glad that boot camp has started back up! There is honestly no better workout, in my opinion. But I definitely had to pause a few times to keep that banana down, if you know what I’m sayin’ :).

Due to my near-death experience at boot camp, I wasn’t in the mood to whip up an extravagant dinner by ANY means, so protein smoothie it was! I blended some Advocare Vanilla Meal Replacement Protein, ice, water, 1 banana, 1 TBS PB2, and 1 TBS cocoa until smooth, and slurped that bad boy down. It was so refreshing after the super hot workout.

So, there you go! That was my first day back to normal eating. I woke up today feeling much better about myself, all after one day of eating well!

Weekly Workout Goals 5.29

Time for my weekly workout goals!! Starting on Tuesday, of course, due to Memorial Day being yesterday. I was a bad, bad girl eating wise this past weekend. Not gonna lie. But that鈥檚 OKAY, one weekend does not make or break me!

So, without further ado, here is how I plan on kicking my own butt this week:

Tuesday: Camp Gladiator Bootcamp (cardio day)

Wednesday: Gym (heavy legs)

Thursday: Bootcamp (weights + cardio)

Friday: Gym (HIIT sprints + upper body weights)

Saturday: Gym (Heavy legs)

Sunday: off OR a bike ride with the husband!

3-4 days of cardio, and 3 days of strength training. Manageable. Effective. I鈥檓 ready.

Heavy Legs + A New Gym

As I mentioned before, I recently joined a new gym, which is kind of a big deal for me. I haven鈥檛 been to a gym in over a year; I鈥檝e stuck to my outdoor boot camp in order to get my workouts in. However, I realized that I missed doing heavy lifting workouts. My boot camp has 3 weight days a week, but we do so many reps within the hour that I only use one set of 12鈥檚 and that鈥檚 it. I missed squats and leg presses with the big kid weights!

Don鈥檛 get me wrong, I am by no means a weight lifting pro. If anything, I鈥檓 a beginner. But that doesn鈥檛 mean that I don鈥檛 enjoy lifting, or aspire to be better at it. So on my first day back at the gym, I eased into things with a fairly basic but VERY effective leg workout.聽 I based it loosely around Jamie Eason鈥檚 Live Fit Trainer, taking out some of her exercises and replacing them with a few of my favorites (such as sit down squats and Bulgarian lunges!).

Believe you me, I am FEELING this one today (2 days later!). Walking up the stairs (and let鈥檚 be honest, sitting on the toilet) is killing me. So I guess this means that it worked!

I suckered my husband into going with me on my first day at the new gym. I鈥檓 not sure why I get so anxious when it comes to gyms! I鈥檓 intimidated or something, I suppose. Either way, I鈥檓 over it now thanks to my dragging him with me, and I鈥檓 really enjoying the place. I will have to come up with a schedule that fits in both the gym and my boot camps!

Crockpots & Tuesday Mornings

My Tuesday morning was entirely too eventful for my liking.

I had the bright idea last night, since crock pots are so easy, that I would just throw stuff in it this morning to make Chicken Taco Chili (recipe later!) and it wouldn’t take me more than, say, 5 minutes.

Ha.

Things always work out so well in my head. Alas, upon waking this morning I realized that I hadn’t chopped ANY of the veggies, and that opening 6 cans with my handheld can opener was going to take more than 5 minutes on its own. Sheesh. So, after chopping peppers and onions and painfully cranking open multiple cans of beans and tomatoes, I finally got everything dumped into the pot in around 15 minutes or so. Then, as I’m taking the chicken out of its bag to throw on top of my veggie/bean/tomato mess, the juice (ick) goes EVERYWHERE. Literally,everywhere. Being the germaphobe (bacteria-phobe?!?) that I am, I spent at least 15 more minutes scrubbing down my counters, hands, and hands again until I was positive there wasn’t e-coli raging throughout my kitchen.

I’m fairly certain there is, which is why I will probably clean it AGAIN tonight.

Needless to say, my crock pot adventure took MUCH longer than expected. But I still made time for my favorite breakfast ever; a whole wheat English muffin topped with cheddar, 1 egg, and plenty of egg whites. Yum.

After a late arrival to work, I tackled my inbox and assignments until lunchtime rolled around. I live super close to my office (about a 6 minute drive), so I was able to run home today and whip up a yummy lunch of Annie’s mac ‘n cheese, Al Fresco Chicken Sausage, and TONS of veggies from my prep night!

The rest of my day will include finishing up at the office, watching The Bachelorette on my DVR (since my husband will be out and I won’t have to hear him complain), then hitting up a NEW GYM to get my leg workout on! I’m always so anxious to try a new gym…it’s intimidating to me, and I can’t really figure out why. Luckily Preston will be going with me, so hopefully it’ll be less “scary”.

The Workout Challenge

In my quest to build up muscle and lower my overall body fat, I decided that I should brainstorm some sort of reward-based system to help me stick to my workout goals. I like rewards. I also like to have accountability with my workouts (hence group boot camp sessions), so I enlisted my husband to join me in this little endeavor. We decided that every week, we would plan what workout we would do each day (gym, boot camp, bike ride, etc), and if we were able to stick to the plan perfectly, then each of us got $10 to put in our “gift pot.” That means that by the end of each month, we could each potentially have $40 in our Gift Pots! Then, we would buy fun gifts for each other out of the money earned. So if I am super diligent and meet my goals EVERY week, then there will be $40 for Preston to use to buy me something special! It motivates us to work out, plus gives us fun money to spend on gifts for each other. Also, there’s a little competition in there to have more money in your pot than your spouse 馃檪

So, I decided to share my workout plan with you guys for EXTRA accountability! Feel free to donate $10 to my Gift Pot as well, if I stick to these goals. Ha.

This week is “off week” for my boot camp, so most of my exercises will have to be at the gym or at home. Since I was out all last week with HORRIBLE allergies, I’m fairly certain that this workout schedule will kick my hiney. Good riddance, hind quarters.聽 I’ll be sure to keep you guys posted on my progress as the week goes on!

Frozen bananas and scale woes

First order of business today is to stand up on my little, tiny, insignificant soapbox and whine preach a little today about why I hate scales.

Ahem.

In all seriousness though, scales piss me off. We base so much of our self worth on that little tiny number, or at least I do. What that number says can make or break my entire day. It changes how I feel about myself, my mood, how I treat my husband…it’s ridiculous. Anyone else out there picking up what I’m putting down?

This all stems from the other day, when I basically had a scale-induced MELTDOWN in front of my husband, Preston. It was pathetic. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m struggling with the concept of “skinny fat” and how to bring down not my body weight, but my body fat percentage. I’m fine with the way I look, but that recent health scare really put things into perspective for me. So, I spoke to a nutritionist about my eating habits, and her alarming response was that I needed to be eating MORE than the current 1200-1300 calories that I was consuming. I worked out too hard to be eating so little: my body was holding on to fat like a new puppy. So…I’ve been doing that. I upped my calories to around 1600 a day, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. I haven’t overindulged too much, I haven’t underfed my body. I’ve actually been kind of digging the way my body has been looking lately….and sadly, THAT is a rarity.

So, what possessed me to hop on the scale yesterday morning, I’ll never know. I was feeling SO good about myself, my body, everything. I was starting to tell that my workouts were actually making a difference. I wore a swimsuit to a Cinco de Mayo pool party and didn’t feel like submerging myself in the water the second my coverup hit the ground.

But, I hopped on the scale Monday morning, and nearly passed out.

I’m no nutritionist. I’m not a dietician, I’m not a trainer. I don’t fully understand why the body works the way it does, but there has to be SOME explanation for my weight going up almost 7 lbs in a matter of 2 weeks. Especially when I feel like I look better than ever.

Maybe I have body dysmorphia…but instead of thinking I’m fat, I actually think I’m not???

Whatever the reason, whatever the case…I’m over it. OVER IT. My clothes fit, my body is tighter than ever, and I’m happy with the way I look. And because of that (and the fact that my poor husband can’t handle another scale meltdown), I’m saying screw the scale!

We don’t need it. It tells us NOTHING. Muscle weighs more than fat. Water retention goes up and down at the blink of an eye. The scale is not the number we need to focus on. It doesn’t need to control us. What matters is if our expensive (or inexpensive, whatever) clothes still fit, our lucky underwear doesn’t split, and that we love ourselves despite that evil little number. I have many people in my life who love me, despite that evil little number . They have no idea what that number is, or if it goes up or down. My husband tells me I’m beautiful LITERALLY every day, and he sure as heck doesn’t know what that number is.

Can I get an amen?

Phew, I’m glad I got that off my chest.

I hope everyone had a fun Cinco de Mayo! I did…I think. It was definitely a rough day. Cinco de Mayo: 1, Melissa: 0. But Preston and I had a great time hanging out with friends and getting a little sunshine.

Preston wanted to go for the pensive look. He doesn’t ever want to take photos with me, so I obliged 馃檪

My final thought of the day: frozen bananas. Just a little insight into who I am, or maybe a tip to those of you who are just like me: don’t put the WHOLE BANANA IN THE FREEZER. Especially when you are making a protein smoothie, after a boot camp, and you’re starving and all you want is a banana in your smoothie ASAP!

Sigh.

Now, how exactly do you peel a frozen banana? The same way you peel a normal banana, it just takes 10x longer, and you end up with frozen fingers and a poor attitude. That is all.

This or that?

Here I am, all alone on a Thursday night, blogging and watching Mad Men on my DVR. And why am I alone, you ask? Oh, that’s because my RIDICULOUS husband got offered tickets to the MAVS PLAYOFF GAME tonight! Are you kidding me?! He is such a bandwagon fan, and he always gets to go to games! He’s got some pretty sweet seats, too. Sigh.

Bitter, party of one.

Despite my lonely evening (totally being dramatic here, by the way…I actually LOVE a little “me time”), I’ve had a fairly good day. After my yummy breakfast, I was fairly full until lunch rolled around. I am lucky enough to be able to go home sometimes during lunch (I live roughly 7 minutes away from my office), so I decided to head to the casa and whip up another random meal of sorts. I had a tiiiiny bit of filet left from my birthday dinner, so I sliced that up and placed it in between two corn tortillas, added a little cheddar cheese, and made myself a quesadilla. Added on some carrots and black beans and I had myself a pretty decent lunch!

I love throwing together leftovers and making something completely new out of them! Plus, I hate wasting food!

The rest of my day consisted of a pre-workout snack of a banana and peanut butter, followed by a killer weights workout at boot camp. Love, love, love weights days! Please take a look at what my slightly OCD very organized husband did to my trunk while I was in Florida:

Yup, he organized my mats/weights in a bin so that I can easily transport my gear from camp to camp. Thank goodness for him, because I am so far from organized it’s not even funny! Speaking of not funny…check out the temperature in my car after my workout:

Yup….106. It’s May 3. Help?

The rest of my night will most likely consist of a Meal Replacement Shake from Advocare (vanilla, with 1 TBS of PB2, 1 TBS of cocoa powder, and 1 banana), Mad Men, and an early bedtime. Definitely not cooking dinner for just me, plus I need the protein the shake provides. Me time = bliss 馃檪

Unfortunately, neither now! I gave up Diet Coke almost two years ago and I’ve never looked back! Every once in a while I’ll have a Sprite, and recently I tasted that new Dr. Pepper 10 and that stuff is GOOD…I’ll need to stay away 馃檪

Fruit punch, hands down! Lemonade is too tart for me 馃檪

Neither, to be honest! Caramel Apples hurt my teeth, and Cotton Candy is too sugary (if there is such a thing?!?)

Neither…Twix!

Pudding or Jell-O?

Pudding! Absolutely!

Turkey or Chicken?

Chicken!! I eat it every single day almost!

American or Provolone Cheese?

Neither…cheddar (and NOT the orange kind…do you know what makes it orange?!?)

Crackers or Cookies?

If I’m being honest…….cookies 馃檪

Pretzels or Chips?

Pretzels!!! I don’t care for chips, UNLESS they are tortilla chips. Then it’s game on.

Mexican food or Japanese food?

Mexican food! If my husband and I could have it for every meal, we would!

Italian 馃檪 yay pasta!

Pie or Cake?

If we’re talking the cold-pie variety, like ice box pies, or chocolate pies, then definitely pie 馃檪 but if I had both sitting in front of me, I wouldn’t discriminate…I’d eat both!

Frozen Yogurt! Ice cream makes my tummy hurt. I’ll put a few cookies IN my frozen yogurt though!

Pizza.聽Definitely.

Chocolate Bars I guess, but I can’t eat too much of one or I’ll get sick

Sweat-less

Can you believe it鈥檚 already Thursday? Where has this week gone? I swear the older I get, the faster time goes by. Especially now that I鈥檓 an ANCIENT 26 years old 馃檪

Last night the husband and I had a fairly decent boot camp workout. The thing about my particular boot camp is that there are multiple locations you can go to鈥hich is great for times like last night when Preston got home later than expected from work, yet we were still able to make the 7 pm camp down the road. However, each location has a different trainer, and some are better more effective than others. I got a MUCH better workout than I would have on my own, but deep down I knew it would鈥檝e probably been more of a beat down at my normal camp location. Case in point, I still looked like this afterwards:

In my defense (because I look like a went on a 5 minute jog here), I don’t sweat very much. It’s not a good thing, really. In extreme heat situations (such as Bikram yoga, but that’s another story for another day), I will sweat fair amounts. But typical workouts/runs/etc, I don’t really get too gross. Does anyone else have this problem? At any given聽boot camp I will burn close to 700 calories, my face will be as red as a tomato, but my body will only have a slight dampness to it. This means that I also get very overheated at times, because my body isn’t cooling itself off properly.

What can I say, I’m weird.

After camp, we came home to finish off leftovers from my birthday聽then stayed up later than we should have finishing Season 2 of True Blood (SUCH a weird show!). Thanks to Sookie and friends, waking up this morning was not fun. I still managed to whip together my new favorite breakfast, though, so that brightened my day a little (in聽the way only food can :)). It’s one whole wheat english muffin, toasted, topped with 1 egg and 1/2 cup of egg whites scrambled. Also, there’s a slice of yummy white cheddar cheese under that mess of eggs:

Naturally, I topped it off with a big cup of coffee, made by my husband (I swear, he makes the best coffee!).
